Cheryl Anne Brown is a South Australian painter of contemporary landscapes. Her earlier self-described references to Fred Williams and Brett Whiteley have now, as her confidence has increased, given way to her own inimitable style. Her large-scale oils on canvas are honest, expressionist depictions of the Australian landscape – the cragginess, activity and tranquillity, energy and movement.
Cheryl Anne’s love of the South Australian coastal landscape is evident – she frequently revisits images of the Yorke Peninsula, where she was born, and the Fleurieu Peninsula, where she now resides. Using panoramic and close-up views, exaggerated perspective and life-size elements, one feels they could step right into a painting. The textures and colours of the rocks, sand and water are superbly captured, only occasionally interrupted by a man-made structure. In Cheryl’s own words, “I want the owners of my works to take home a bit of the landscape with them”.
